A roadside bomb killed at least 12 Afghan civilians, including five children in southeastern Paktika province on Sunday, an official said, dpa reported.

"Two women, five children and five men were martyred when their vehicle stepped down on roadside bomb," Mukhlis Afghan, the provincial governor spokesman said. "Five others were injured."

The civilians were travelling from the Pakistani town Quetta when the bomb struck their vehicle in the border district of Wazikhil in Paktika.

Civilians and public spaces have been largely targeted in an escalation of attacks by insurgents across the country in recent days.
