The congresswoman targeted in a shooting rampage in Arizona in January can speak in full sentences and walk with assistance more than two months after the attack, her doctors said Friday in Houston, Texas.

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is "making leaps and bounds in terms of neurological recovery," Dr Dong Kim said at the rehabilitation hospital, dpa reported.

Giffords has asked why she is in the hospital and been told she was shot. She has not been told that six people died in the attack that took place as she was meeting with constituents outside a grocery store.

Giffords may even be able to attend the space shuttle launch next month. Her astronaut husband, Mark Kelly, is to command the final mission of the shuttle Endeavour set for April 19.

The alleged gunman, Jared Lee Loughner, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a new 49-count indictment issued last week.
