A magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck northeastern Japan Thursday, the Meteorological Agency said and issued a tsunami warning, DPA reported

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property. The earthquake took place at a depth of 25 kilometres and about 333 kilometres north-northeast of Tokyo, the US Geological Survey reported.

There was no immediate impact reported at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, officials at the plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) told reporters. The plant was crippled by the March earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

Those working at the site had been already evacuated, TEPCO said.

The epicentre of the quake, that took place at 11:32 pm (14:32 GMT), was off Miyagi prefecture, the Meteorological Agency said.

Tsunami waves as high as 1 metre had already reached the coast of Miyagi, public broadcaster NHK reported. The same region was hit by a 9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami on March 11.
