The Afghan government has beefed up security and put in place all security measures to deal with possible revenge attacks by militants in the wake of the killing of Osama bin Laden by U.S. troops, spokesman of Defense Ministry General Zahir Azimi said on Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

"All security measures have been put in place and that we have put our security forces on high alert to ensure that no unpleasant thing happens,"Azimi told reporters in a weekly press conference.

However, he said that the killing of Osama bin Laden the leader of al-Qaida "was major achievement of the war on terror."

The death of bin Laden would have its impact on the war in Afghanistan but only in long term, Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman said, adding that there are an unspecified number of al- Qaida fighters in Afghanistan.

Bin Laden, the alleged mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on U.S., was killed in Pakistan on Monday.

The death of bin Laden has risen the fear of revenge attacks by Taliban and associated militants against Afghan and NATO-led troops in Afghanistan.

Security has already been tightened in sensitive areas including government buildings, diplomatic missions and the U.S. embassy in Kabul.
