Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the so-called underwear bomber, surprised the Detroit courtroom Wednesday by pleading guilty to charges that he tried to blow up an airplane in 2009, dpa reported.
The trial of the 25-year-old Nigerian began Tuesday and had been expected to last at least four weeks. US District Judge Nancy Edmunds declared that Abdulmutallab was mentally competent to declare his guilt, the Detroit Free Press reported.
