Real Madrid on Wednesday joined the already-qualified Barcelona and AC Milan in the knock-out stage of the Champions League with a 2-0 victory at Olympique Lyon, dpa reported.

Germany striker Mario Gomez, meanwhile, was on song as he scored a first-half hat-trick in Group A as Bayern Munich all but guaranteed their the place in the next round with a 3-2 victory against Napoli in a game both sides finished with 10 men.

Big-spending Premier League club Manchester City secured their first-ever away win in the Champions League with a convincing 3-0 victory at Villarreal to move into second place.

Bayern are on 10 points, while City have seven. Napoli are on five.

In Group C Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to give Real a good 2-0 victory in Lyon, while Ajax Amsterdam kept alive their hopes of joining the Spaniards in the next round with a 4-0 win against Dinamo Zagreb.

Real are on a maximum 12 points from their four games, while Ajax are on seven.

Benfica Lisbon looked on course to advance from Group C when they were leading against Basel, but a 1-1 equalizer from Benjamin Huggel in the 64th minute allowed Manchester United to move past the Portuguese club.

Antonio Valencia scored the only goal of the game at Old Trafford to give his side victory against Otelul Galati.

Both United and Benfica are on eight points, while Basle have five.

Former champions Inter Milan are in control in Group B after a 2-1 victory against Lille moved them to nine points. CSKA Moscow, who played to a goalless draw at Trabzonspor, are on five points, as are their opponents.

Barcelona and AC Milan were the first teams through to the round of the last 16, as they made sure of advancing on Tuesday.
