Police identify Virginia Tech shooter

A 22-year-old student was named as the gunman who shot and killed a police officer at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University before turning his gun on himself, DPA reported.

Police on Friday identified Ross Truett Ashley, a part-time student at a nearby college, as the man they said perpetrated the killing that prompted a campus-wide lockdown, CNN reported.

A campus police officer was shot and killed Thursday during a traffic stop in a parking lot near Virginia Tech's basketball stadium. Witnesses said they saw a man who was not in the car approach and shoot the officer before fleeing on foot, police said.

The body of a man killed by a gunshot was later found in a parking lot. Police on Thursday declined to say whether the body was that of the shooter but Friday confirmed it was Ashley.

The university was the scene of the worst mass shooting in US history four and a half years ago, in which 32 people were killed.

Police said they still do not know Ashley's motives for killing the officer or himself.
