Police during an operation in Darqad district of Takhar province, 245 km north of capital Kabul captured a Taliban local commander, police spokesman in the province Abdul Khalil Asil said Tuesday.
"The operation launched Sunday night during which a Taliban local commander namely Mawlawi Shamsudin was captured," Asil told Xinhua.
He also said the arrested commander used to serve as deputy governor of Darqad district during Taliban rule which collapse in 2001. When he was arrested, he was busy mobilizing locals to support insurgents against administration.
Taliban militants fighting Afghan and NATO-led troops have yet to make comment.
