US says Syria has failed to meet six-point peace plan

The Syrian government has failed to meet all of its initial obligations related to the ceasefire, including troops withdrawal from populated centres and an end to the use of heavy weapons, the United States said Thursday, dpa reported.

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, said fighting had eased after the ceasefire that came into force on April 12, but bombings in Homs and other Syrian cities had picked up this week.

"The Syrian government has yet to fully implement the initial obligations in the six-point plan" presented to Damascus by envoy Kofi Annan, Rice said.

She said there had been "little progress" also in meeting the humanitarian needs of the estimated 1 million Syrians caught in the 13-month conflict.
