The United States and Russia submitted separate draft resolutions on Friday to authorize the deployment of 300 unarmed military observers tasked with monitoring the April 12 ceasefire in Syria, DPA reported.
Both drafts agree on the objectives of ending the 13-month conflict in Syria, starting with a ceasefire, and carry almost similar language in presenting the council's demands to end the bloodshed and provide humanitarian aid to Syrians caught in fighting.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday proposed establishing a 300-strong UN Supervision Mission in Syria for an initial three-month period and asked the council to quickly approve it. An advance team of about seven observers is currently in Syria to prepare for the larger deployment once it is approved by the council.
