Capello appointed Russia coach

Fabio Capello has been appointed coach of Russia's national team to succeed Dutchman Dick Advocaat, the Russian Football Union (RFU) said Thursday.

The 66-year-old Italian, who resigned as England manager in February, has signed a contract which Russia media reports said would run until the end of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, DPA reported.

The contract is reportedly worth up to 12.25 million dollars a year.

Capello's first match in charge will be the August 15 friendly against Ivory Coast in Moscow.

Russia went out in the group stage at Euro 2012. Advocaat announced before the tournament that he would be leaving to take over at PSV Eindhoven.
