Former president George HW Bush, who has been in hospital with a chronic cough since November, was moved Saturday out of intensive care at a Texas hospital, a spokesman said.

"President Bush's condition has improved, so he has been moved today from the intensive care unit to a regular patient room at the Methodist Hospital to continue his recovery," the spokesman Jim McGrath said in an e-mail, dpa reported.

The former president, 88, has been in the hospital in Houston, Texas since November 23 with a bronchitis-like cough.

The senior Bush served as president from 1989 to 1993 and is the father of former president George W Bush, who held office from 2001 to 2009.
