The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution Wednesday demanding an immediate end to violence and the implementation of democratic political reforms in the war-torn Syria, dpa reported.

The resolution states that both sides involved in the Syrian conflict, which has already led to at least 70,000 deaths, should stop acts of violence immediately and comply with international human rights laws to protect civilians, especially women and children.

The resolution calls on the Syrian government to facilitate political dialogue and initiate the transition to a democratic society.

The draft also warned the Syrian government to release those detained illegally, cease attacks on civilians and Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries and grant unfettered access to international and UN investigators.
