Iran and Saudi Arabia should take part in an upcoming conference aimed at finding a political solution to Syria's conflict, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday, dpa reported.
Some "important players" need to be added to the conference's participants, including Iran and Saudi Arabia, Lavrov said in the Swedish mining town of Kiruna, according to a transcript on his ministry's website.
Lavrov indicated after late night talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry that Moscow and Washington so far agree only on having the same countries participate as in a similar conference in June, which did not include Iranians and Saudis.
Lavrov and Kerry agreed last week to call for the new conference, to bring together members of both the Syrian government and the opposition. Initially planned for later this month, the conference was now expected to take place in June in Geneva.
