Afghan council leader killed in suicide bombing

A senior Afghan politician and 10 others were killed Monday, when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives in the northern province of Baghlan, officials said, dpa reported.

Mohammad Rasoul Mohseni was the head of the Baghlan provincial council, a body composed of tribal elders and politicians.

"Eleven of our compatriots including Mohammad Rasoul Mohseni were killed and five others injured when a bomber blew himself up at the entrance to the provincial council building in Pul-e-Khumri city," Asadullah Sherzad, the police chief of Baghlan province, told dpa.

A health department official, Zobair Akbari, said three of Mohseni's bodyguards were among the dead.

One woman was also said to have been killed.

Mohseni, a warlord-turned-politician, was an influential anti-Taliban figure. One of his younger brothers, Mohammad Azim Mohseni, is currently a member of parliament for Baghlan.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack.
