Fast-track court judge Yogesh Khanna said Friday that the December gang rape in New Delhi was "an extreme case of brutality" and a "beastly crime" that shocked the collective conscience of society, dpa reported.
Khanna said it had to be treated as the rarest of rare cases that deserved the death penalty.
Defence lawyers said they would appeal in the High Court against the verdict and the death sentences.
"Now her (the victim's) soul can rest in peace," said the victim's brother who was present in court. "Before she died she had said they should be burned alive for the way they tortured her ... They did not deserve anything less than death."
