Poroshenko says Ukraine has fulfilled most of requirements for visa-free regime with EU

Kiev has fulfilled most of requirements necessary for establishing a visa-free travel regime with the European Union, Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko said on May.20, according to TASS.

The press service of the Ukrainian head of state said Poroshenko had taken part in a government meeting dedicated to issues of the implementation of the programme for simplifying the visa regime. "Participants in the meeting noted that most of technical requirements laid down by European experts had been fulfilled completely or to a larger extent. Among the criteria that need further work on are ensuring the security system of primary identification that provides biometric passports and introduction of ID cards," the press service said.

Official Kiev pins big hopes for the simplification of border crossing procedures on an Eastern Partnership summit in Riga to be held on May 21-22. Back in January 2015, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin said Ukraine hoped for the liberalization of the visa regime and for "concrete decisions" on the implementation of the Ukraine-European Union agreement.

Earlier, Christian Danielsson, Director General for Enlargement at the European Commission, said Ukraine was not ready for a visa-free regime with the European Union. He said the European Union would offer a visa-free regime to Ukraine when it saw the country was ready for that.

On May 11, the European Commission published a report on Georgia's and Ukraine's progress on the path towards visa liberalization. According to the report, neither of the two countries was ready for that. Another such report will be issued in December 2015.
