North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, held a summit in Beijing Tuesday, sources said, ahead of a possible second summit with US President Donald Trump, Trend reports citing Yonhap.

Kim and Xi held talks for about one hour to discuss ways to coordinate their stances ahead of a potential summit between the leaders of the North and the US, according to the sources.

They are also believed to have talked about ways to strengthen their ties as the two nations mark the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relationship this year.

North Korean and Chinese state media have not yet reported on the summit.

A special train, carrying Kim and his wife, Ri Sol-ju, arrived in Beijing earlier in the day on a four-day trip at the invitation of Chinese President Xi, according to the North's state media.

It marked Kim's fourth trip to the neighboring ally since taking office in late 2011 and came as Washington and Pyongyang are in talks to set the venue for the next meeting between Kim and Trump.

After the summit, Kim and his wife are believed to have attended a welcoming dinner hosted by Xi and his wife at the Great Hall of the People, the sources said.

Kim's arrival in Beijing coincided with what is believed to be his 35th birthday.
