Indian-origin UK prime minister candidate Rishi Sunak visited the Bhaktivedanta Manor temple, the UK headquarters of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) on Thursday along with wife Akshata Murthy to ring in Janmashtami celebrations.

Taking to Twitter, Sunak wrote, "Today I visited the Bhaktivedanta Manor temple with my wife Akshata to celebrate Janmashtami, in advance of the popular Hindu festival celebrating Lord Krishna’s birthday."

Sunak, who stormed into the final two in the race for the PM post, is, however, trailing behind his rival, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.

Truss, who has consistently topped polls of Conservative Party members, has a 32 percentage point lead over Sunak among those who have decided to vote, a survey showed. Truss was on 66 per cent, with Sunak on 34 per cent, according to Reuters.

The governing Conservative Party is voting by postal ballot to choose a new party leader after Boris Johnson said he would step down following a series of scandals. UK will have a new prime minister by September 5.
