Yushchenko opens Ukrainian school in Tbilisi

( ForUm ) - Victor Yushchenko and Mikhail Saakashvili of Georgia attended a ceremony on Friday to inaugurate a new building of the Mykhailo Hrushevsky Ukrainian School in Tbilisi, president's press office rep.

In his speech, the Ukrainian leader expressed confidence their establishment "will be the place to preserve the Ukrainian language, culture and traditions." The government of Ukraine works to develop and promote education, he added. Mr. Yushchenko gave the school presents.

Saakashvili spoke at the ceremony too.

The Hrushevsky School was founded in September 1999. Most of its teachers are members of Georgia's Ukrainian community. There are 120 pupils in the school today but the number of classes grows every year.

The school had not had its own building for eight years.
