( ForUm ) - Victor Yushchenko sent a letter to Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych with a request to resolve the developing crisis in Ukraine's fishing industry, president press office reported.

The President said the government and law enforcement agencies had slightly improved the situation in the sector last year but added that there were still quite a few problems to be resolved.

He said the National Program to Develop the Fishing Industry and the National Program to Build Fishing Vessels were not being implemented, making Ukrainian fishers produce less fish and Ukraine satisfy its needs by importing more fish every year. He also complained that the country's fishing ports used only 10% of their capabilities.

The President asked the premier to study the causes of the crisis, take urgent measures to resolve it and inform him about the government's achievements in three months and at the end of 2007.
