( Reuters ) - An underground train came off the rails in London on Thursday and the London Underground transport system said it was investigating whether there had been an obstruction on the track.

The train came off the rails in the east of the city, on the Central Line, between Bethnal Green and Mile End stations. A source said neither the derailed train nor another in the tunnel behind it was "even remotely full".

The derailment occurred at 9:05 a.m. (0805 GMT), according to police.

"(London Underground) is looking into reports that there was an obstruction on the track," a London Underground spokesman said.

"At this stage it appears that one passenger has suffered a minor injury to their foot. LU is putting in place well-practised plans to safely remove passengers from the train, and from a stalled train behind it. Both stations have been closed," he said.

Ambulance workers and firefighters were on their way to the scene.
