UN chief "saddened" by deadly floods in South Asia (Video)

( People's Daily ) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon voiced his sadness on Tuesday at the deadly floods in South Asia which have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people.

"The secretary-general is deeply saddened by the hundreds of lives lost and the millions affected by floods in South Asia," Ban 's press office said in a statement.

"He extends his condolences to the families of those who perished. He is also concerned by the economic devastation faced by the survivors," the statement said.

The UN chief commended the "prompt and effective response to the flooding by the affected countries," and reaffirmed the United Nations' readiness to assist.

Incessant rain and overflowing rivers have triggered deadly floods in India and Bangladesh, killing more than 300 people and affecting millions.
