( Excite UK ) - Two buses filled with passengers have collided and burst into flames on a road in northern Nigeria, killing 33 people, state-owned radio said.

Radio Nigeria said the crash on Friday afternoon occurred on the Gusau-Sokoto road - 435 miles northwest of the country's capital, Abuja - when one of the buses crashed into the other while avoiding a stray animal.

All the occupants of both vehicles were killed, the report said, citing witnesses.

Road accidents claiming large numbers of lives are frequent in Africa's most populous country, which is largely dependent on badly maintained highways and vehicles for the movement of people and goods.
