US welcomes Turkey President's visit to Armenia

The United States welcomed on Thursday the visit the Turkish president will pay to Armenia.

Mark Toner, the spokesman for the Bureau of European & Eurasian Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, told AA correspondent on Wednesday that the United States welcomed Turkish President Abdullah Gul's accepting an invitation of Armenian President Serzh Sargsian to watch a World Cup qualifier in the Armenian capital of Yerevan, reported Worldbulletin.

Toner said the United States was appreciating the courage of the two presidents to take steps in order to foster regional peace and prosperity.

The spokesman expressed his country's hope that the historic meeting would be a step for totally normalizing Turkish-Armenian relations.

Sargsian invited Gul to watch a World Cup qualifier to be played between the national teams of Turkey and Armenia in Yerevan on Saturday.

A statement released by Gul's office on Wednesday said that the president accepted Sargsian's invitation.
