Turkish Interior Minister Besir Atalay arrived in Iraqi city of Irbil on Sunday to meet officials of the Kurdish regional administration in the north of Iraq, CNN Turk reported.

Atalay headed for city of Salah ad-Din where he had a meeting with Massoud Barzani, head of the Kurdish regional administration.

The meeting lasted for three hours and was closed to the press.

According to the CNN Turk sources, the main theme of the talks was the activity of the terrorist organization PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) on the Turkish-Iraqi border. The ceasefire declared by the group was also discussed. According to report, during the meeting Barzani said that the ceasefire should be extended.

On August 13 PKK announced a ceasefire until September 20.

Atalay also met with the Prime Minister of Kurdish regional administration Berham Salih. After the talks Salih said that the PKK was discussed during the meeting.

"We respect international law and do not want to harbour any elements that threaten any of our neighbouring countries. But we hope that the neighbouring countries would also respect the sovereignty of Iraq", he said.
