Turkey welcomes NATO's new strategic concept

Turkey's President Abdullah Gul welcomed the new strategic concept adopted by NATO countries at Lisbon summit on Friday, Anadolu Agency reported.

Speaking to reporters in Lisbon on Saturday, Gul said the new concept was in line with Turkey's expectations.

On Turkey's sensitivities about NATO-EU relations, Gul said, "I would be pleased to say that several important EU members, especially NATO Secretary-General, remembered their responsibilities and expressed clearly at the meeting that they had to fulfill their responsibilities against Turkey and that it was a must."

On Afghanistan, Gul said NATO's military operations would not be enough to restore peace, stability and security.

"Before all these, we have to win hearts of Afghan people. Afghanistan belongs to Afghans," he said.

Gul also expressed his views about the decision made to improve cooperation between NATO and Russia, saying, "Russia is a neighbor of Turkey but it is also a neighbor to several European countries."

"When it comes to nuclear weapons and long-range missiles, Russia is a super power. So, relations between NATO and Russia is highly important. Discussions are made on this matter, which is very important for peace and stability," he said.
