Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu underwent a coronary by-pass surgery on Sunday in the Turkish capital of Ankara, a hospital statement said, Xinhua reported.
The written statement issued by Ankara Guven Hospital head doctor Tevfik Ali Kucukbas said that the heart surgery was successful.
The statement said Eroglu, 72, arrived at the hospital and had a surgery at local time 18:30 (1630 GMT) performed by doctor Haldun Karagoz and his team.
"His treatment continues in the intensive care unit," the statement added.
Eroglu departed on Sunday from northern Cyprus for the heart surgery in Ankara.
Doctors detected a coronary occlusion and suggested a "precautionary" heart surgery after an angiography taken on Saturday at the Near East University in northern Cyprus.
Before his departure from the island, Eroglu told reporters that he hopes to recover soon and return to the island to continue Cyprus reunification talks.
Cyprus President and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias has made a brief phone call to Eroglu and wished him "speedy recovery", according to an official statement.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and UN top envoy in Cyprus Alexander Downer have also contacted Eroglu and expressed their wishes for a quick recovery.
Eroglu is engaged in negotiations with Cyprus President and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias on a solution re-uniting the eastern Mediterranean island, divided since 1974 when Turkish troops landed on the north in response to a coup by Greek army officers.
