Although Republic Day is over, leaders of the governing and main opposition parties are still involved in a tug-of-war that is not likely to end soon over a banned rally that marred celebrations to mark the day and clearly indicates a divide between the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and opposition groups, Todayszaman reported.

Leaders of the AK Party and the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) focused on the repercussions of the rally during parliamentary group meetings on Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, the Ankara Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into a banned rally held on Monday in the Turkish capital to mark the 89th anniversary of the Turkish Republic as leaders of the governing and main opposition parties were still involved in a tug-of-war over the rally.

A statement from the prosecutor's office said it launched the investigation as the rally violated a law that regulates mass meetings and rallies. It also said new investigations may follow against demonstrators based on reports to come from the Ankara Police Department on accusations of deliberately injuring individuals, resisting the police and destroying public property.
