At least three people, including a 3-year-old child, were rescued when a boat allegedly carrying illegal migrants sank off Turkey's southwestern Mugla province early Sunday, Turkish officials have said, Anadolu Agency reported.

According to initial reports, the vessel was heading to Greece's Kos Island, about two miles (3.2 kilometers) from the coast of Turkey, when it capsized off Bodrum in Mugla.

The rescued migrants were taken to Bodrum State Hospital, said coast guard officials.

The nationality of the migrants remains unknown. Turkish coast guard vessels are continuing their search for survivors, officials added.

Turkey is a regular transit point for undocumented immigrants trying to reach Europe.

According to a recent report, Turkish teams have rescued 1,497 migrants and apprehended six human traffickers in about 60 incidents as part of its operations in the Aegean Sea in 2015.
