“US, West leave Turkey face to face with Syrian crisis”

Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept.28

By Anakhanum Khidayatova - Trend:

The US still doesn't have a clear position on the Middle East, Cagatay Balci, analyst at Ankara-based Caucasus Strategic Research Centre (KAFKASSAM) told Trend Sept.28.

Naturally, in this situation, the relations between Turkey and the US can deteriorate, he said.

Another issue which the two countries are to agree on is the status of the Syrian wing of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), according to the expert.

PKK is a terrorist organization for Turkey and the sides' positions on this issue can negatively affect the bilateral relations as well, Balci added.

The analyst said that the West and the US have left Turkey face to face with the Syrian issue.

"During the refugee crisis, the West and the US feared of taking the responsibility. This allowed Iran and Russia to even more intervene in Syrian conflict," said Balci.

The expert believes that Turkey is likely to agree with Russia, but not with Iran on the Syrian issue.

Turkey's diplomatic and economic relations with Russia are stronger than with Iran, according to Balci.

Moreover, the leaders of the two countries have close ties and they can find a solution only by reaching an agreement, thereby avoiding the negative impact on the bilateral cooperation, he added.
