Turkey's national carrier Turkish Airlines (THY) will start to expand its fleet by purchasing new passenger aircraft in 2018, said Fatih Cekirge, head of THY.

The company will purchase 200 new aircraft until 2030 and the total number of aircraft will reach 500, Turkish Kanal7 TV channel reported.

Head of the company noted that the decision to buy aircraft was made due to construction of a new airport in Istanbul, commissioning of which is expected in early 2018.

The agreement on construction of the third airport in Istanbul was signed in May 2013. It is being built near the Lake Terkos in the north of Istanbul. Total cost of the project is 10 billion Turkish liras.

The airport is expected to be one of the largest in the world and will be named after the country's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
