Turkey detains 9 lawyers on PKK ties suspicion

Baku, Azerbaijan, March 16

By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

Thirty people, including nine lawyers, were detained as part of a special operation in Istanbul, Turkish newspaper Sabah reported March 16.

All the detainees are suspected of having ties with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorist group.

Currently, searches are underway in the offices of the detained lawyers, the names of whom haven't been disclosed yet.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK, which demands the creation of an independent Kurdish state, has continued for over 25 years and has claimed more than 40,000 lives.

The UN and the European Union listed the PKK as a terrorist organization.

PKK's attacks on military units and police stations have become more frequent in the south-eastern Turkey in recent months.

More than 200 soldiers were killed in the clashes between the PKK and Turkey in 2015.
