Turkey's Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says the decision to hold the extraordinary congress of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) wasn't his choice.

"The decision to hold the AKP extraordinary congress was not my choice, it was a political necessity," the TRT Haber news channel quoted Davutoglu as saying May 5.

Davutoglu said he hoped to be the country's prime minister throughout four years and to serve the people's interests.

Meanwhile, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier said the decision to hold the AKP extraordinary congress was made by Davutoglu.

Earlier, Turkey's Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that the extraordinary congress will be held May 22.

It was earlier reported that a congress will be held in mid-May and the ruling party's current chairman Davutoglu will not run for that position again.

The decision to hold the extraordinary congress was made at a meeting between Erdogan and Davutoglu on May 4.

Candidates for the chairman position at the Justice and Development Party were named May 5.

The Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication Binali Yildirim, Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdag, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Berat Albayrak, Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus, and the ruling party's vice chairman Mehmet Ali Sahin are among the candidates.
