Turkish General Staff may merge with Ministry of Defense

Turkey's General Staff can be merged with the Ministry of National Defense, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, Turkish media reported July 12.

Erdogan said this issue was put on the agenda in 2014.

The head of state noted that it is wrong that there are two different institutions responsible for the sphere of defense in such a strong country as Turkey.

"The merger of the Turkish General Staff with the Defense Ministry will further strengthen the country," Erdogan said.

President Erdogan announced the personal composition of the new Cabinet of Ministers earlier, on July 9.

the Land Forces Commander, General Yashar Guler was appointed to the vacant position of the Chief of the General Staff, as Army General Hulusi Akar has been appointed to the post of minister of defense of Turkey.
