Some 26.5 kilograms of smuggled gold were seized during a special operation of the Turkish police on the Syrian-Turkish border in Turkey's Kilis province, Trend reports referring to the country's media.

Two million of Turkish liras were also confiscated, reports said.

Ten kilograms of the smuggled gold were in ingots, the rest - in jewelry, according to Turkish media.

Two Syrian citizens were detained during the operation. Other details of the operation were not reported.

Some 832 operations were carried out to combat smuggling in Turkey in 2018.

As part of the relevant operations, 2,194 people were detained in Turkey, of which 317 were arrested.

During the reported period, 37 operations were carried out in Turkey against fuel smuggling, 41 operations against the export and import of historically valuable items, as well as 371 operations to curb the smuggling of alcoholic beverages.

In 2018, 478,000 liters of smuggled alcoholic beverages, over one million packages of medicines, 23,000 mobile phones and 26,000 tons of chemical preparations were seized in Turkey.

In 2018, 8,817 kilograms of smuggled gold products, about 20,000 units of historically valuable items, 45,000 tons of tobacco products were seized in Turkey.

The total value of the seized goods is 69.9 million Turkish liras.
