A dozen people were shot in Illinois Thursday night and cops were searching for the gunman, Trend reports citing New York Post.

The mass shooting happened around 4 p.m. in East St. Louis on a desolate street with overgrown empty lots and businesses. Six of the victims were rushed to a St. Louis hospital, according to KSDK.

SWAT teams had surrounded a home later in the evening while police used a plane, a helicopter and a drone to search for suspects, according to the report.

A getaway car then crashed into a light rail commuter train several blocks from the shooting, according to KMOV-4.

About 10 train passengers were being evaluated for possible injuries, according to the station.

“We will have more information soon. But right now, our thoughts and prayers are going out to the victims and their families,” East St. Louis Mayor Robert Eastern III said at the scene.

East St. Louis had the highest murder per-capita rate of US cities in 2019, according to FBI statistics.
