By Huseyn Hasanov- Trend:

An active accumulation of water is underway in Turkmenistan's water reservoirs in order to create the necessary reserves for various needs of the national economy, Turkmen Dovlet khabarlary (TDH) state news service reported on Feb.15.

"Nearly 2,700,000,000 cubic meters of vivifying water have already been accumulated," Turkmen Water Industry Ministry told TDH.

Local hydro-builders are carrying out work on increasing the volume of '15 years of independence of Turkmenistan' and Hauzhan water reservoirs which are among the largest in the country.

These man-made lakes are located on the River Karakum , itself a man-made canal originating from the River Amu Darya.

"This water artery holds one of the key positions in the water supply of the country's fields and settlements. Planned work is underway to clean up its bed to improve culvert capacity," the TDH said.

The ongoing activities to collect water flowing down the slopes of Kopet Dag will create additional water resources.

The existing water reservoirs and those under construction in the foothills are also designed to ensure security of settlements, economic facilities and planted areas from flooding by harnessing the power of mountain streams.

In addition, the departments of the country's Ministry of Water Industry are completing the construction of a new water reservoir on the River Gozganchay in the Kaahka district of the Akhal province. The volume of the artificial lake designed to collect mud waters, will amount to 5.2 million cubic meters which will allow irrigation up to 1500 hectares of land. The volume of the pool to supply the locals with drinking water is 500,000 cubic meters.

A new water reservoir with a capacity of 20.5 million cubic meters is under construction in the Kunya Urgench district of Dashoguz province. Work on increasing the capacity of the Mammetkel water reservoir is underway in Balkan province.

Turkmenistan grows cotton, wheat, rice and sugar beet.
