Bulgaria, Turkey and Qatar agree to build trans-Bulgarian highway

Bulgaria, Turkey and Qatar on Friday signed an agreement to build a 300-kilometre highway to reduce the pressure on the existing roads between Europe and the Middle East, DPA reported.

The 760-million-euro (955-million-dollar) highway linking the Bulgarian cities of Svilengrad, in the southeast, and Russe, in the north, is due to be finished in four years.

Once completed, the highway will ease the pressure on the existing routes directly linking the European Union with Turkey and the Middle East.

When Bulgaria, together with Romania, joined EU in 2007, they became the bloc's gateway to Turkey.
