Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct. 17 /Trend, E. Ismailov/

By 2015, the capacity of Azerbaijan's energy system may reach or even exceed 7,000 megawatts, a source in the energy market told Trend.

According to him, works are currently being carried out in the country for the construction of new generating capacities, which will allow a significant increase in the capacity of the energy system.

"As a result of the commissioning of new power facilities, the capacity of the power system may rise to 7,000-7,500 megawatts in 2014," the source said.

According to him, at present, the installed capacity of the country's energy system is about 6,500 MW, about 5500-5600 MW of which is being used. Alongside this, the country's demand for electricity is between 4200-4400 MW.

"That is, the country has good export potential," the source said.

At present, Azerbaijan exchanges energy with Russia, Iran and Georgia.

Creation of new energy-producing capacities is reasonable from the point of view of securing sustainability of country's power system and strengthening its energy security.

Azerenergy JSC is engaged in the production and distribution of electricity in Azerbaijan.
