By Fatih Karimov - Trend:

Iran lost $30 billion in the current Iranian calendar year ending on March 20, as a result of inappropriate consumption of fuel by motor vehicles, IRNA quoted Iranian Oil Minister, Bijan Namdar Zanganeh as saying on March 12.

The difference in the selling prices of oil, gas and oil products with regional prices was $80 billion in the current year, of which $30 billion was lost due to inappropriate consumption patterns, he explained.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he referred to the economy of resistance which had been outlined by the Supreme Leader of the country, saying that the implementation of the resistance economy plan will reduce the national economy's dependence on oil revenues.

Iran's budget bill for the next calendar year starting March 21, has allocated $100 billion to plans for improving fuel consumption patterns, he added.

He noted that selling crude oil should be limited. To this end, $100 billion should be invested in petrochemical and oil refining projects, he added.

On Feb. 19, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei outlined the general policies of the programme to promote an 'economy of resistance' which can lead the Iranian nation to victory in 'the imposed economic war' with the West.

The Leader called the Western sanctions against Iran 'a fully-fledged economic war' and said that the Islamic Republic is determined to force the West to retreat.

Under the programme the government must take action to expand the production and exportation of knowledge-based products, increase domestic production of strategic goods and develop markets in neighbouring countries.

It also encourages greater privatisation and increased exports of electricity, gas, petrochemicals and oil by-products instead of crude oil and other raw materials.
