The third wave of seasonal influenza epidemic continues in Iran, head of the Centre for Disease Control of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education Mohammad Mehdi Gouya said, the Iranian ILNA news agency reported on March 15.

Some 680 people hospitalized and 22 of them have died in the country due to the flu from late 2013 up to date.

Earlier in mid-January Gouya said that some 50,000 people caught the influenza in the country.

The centre's head stressed that the number of people who caught flu has increased compared to last year.

Gouya pointed out that about 95 percent of diseased people caught the H3N2 virus. He named polluted air and weather conditions as affecting factors that influence the spread of influenza.

He also noted the receding of the third wave of the flu. "I am doubtful that another wave of flu is on its way but the health ministry is ready to control it," Gouya said.
