The general governor of Iran's central Markazi province, Mohammad Hossein Moghimi has ordered to stop using mazut at the Shazand thermal power plant near the Arak city, the official IRNA news agency reported Oct. 30.

The order was issued due to air pollution as a result of the operation of the Shazand power plant.

Arak cannot tolerate the mazut pollution anymore, Moghimi said, adding the power plant is permitted only to use gas henceforth. Moghimi said that if the plant has a problem functioning on gas, it will have to be shut down.

The Shazand power plant, located at the 25th kilometer of Arak-Shazand road operates using about 6 million liters of fuel per day, throwing out approximately some 450 metric tons of various emissions such as sulfur, carbon and others.

Last year Iranian MP from the city of Arak, Mohammad Hassan Asafari said that due to the Shazand power plant, the residents of Arak are living 250 days a year under contaminated air conditions.

As a result, 300 people have been afflicted with cancer in the city, he added.
