By Khalid Kazimov - Trend:

Iranian Deputy Minister of Energy Houshang Falahatian has said that in the next Iranian calendar fiscal year (starting Mar. 21) the ministry will take 4,000 megawatt of electricity out of the cross-country transmission grid.

The act follows a policy to shut down low-performance gas power plants with efficiency rates between 20 and 25 percent.

"The legal frameworks have been created within the next year's budget so that we will be able to shut down low-efficiency power plants and replace them with combined cycle power plants," he stated, answering a question about the country's program for reducing carbon production.

He added that the remaining gas power plants will undergo efficiency boost by having steam units build in them, Iran's ISNA news agency reported Feb. 28.

Iran inaugurated its most efficient power plant with more than 45 percent efficiency on Dec. 13.

Iranian Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian said on November 29 that some of the old and worn-out power plants will be scrapped and the efficiency of other power plants will be improved.

Power generation capacity in Iran has grown by seven percent annually during the past 10 years.

Iran's total electricity generation currently stands at 70,000 megawatts.

Falahatian said on Dec. 13 that a tender would be held by the following two months for changing 8,000 megawatts capacity of gas-fired power plants to combined cycle plants.
