Managing Director of the Fisheries Organization of Gilan Province, Iran Eshaq Shabani has said that fishermen in the province have fished 6,500 metric tons of kilka in the current Iranian calendar year (since March 12, 2014).

The number shows a growth of 18 percent, IRIB news agency reported March 16.

The official stated that weather conditions, a rise in the kilka's natural reproduction, and adjustment in fishing boats count for the rise.

He further said that 10 percent of the kilka was sent to the market as human food, and the rest turned into poultry food.

Currently 260 fishermen using 26 fishing boats fish along the province's Caspian Sea coastline.

Some 367 metric tons of bony fish were caught in the province from the beginning of the catch season (October 12) to Nov. 12, showing a rise of 19 percent and with the value of $2.03 million.

Iran's total catch stood at 450,000 tons two years ago. The catch off the southern coast totaled 412,000 metric tons in the mentioned year, while the catch off the northern coast totaled 38,000 metric tons.
