Iran’s electricity export decreases by 40%

Iran's electricity export has decreased by 40 percent during the first month of current Iranian fiscal year (started on March 21).

The country exported 479 million kilowatts (KW) of electricity during the period, meanwhile imported 292 million KW of electricity from the neighboring countries.

Iran's electricity imports also witnessed a fall by seven percent in the one-month period, the country's ISNA news agency reported April 26.

Iran is currently trading electricity with Armenia, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Islamic Republic's electricity generation capacity currently stands at 73.15 gigawatts (GW). Gas power plants share 25.76 GW of the generation capacity.

Over 3.848 billion cubic meters of natural gas was consumed in the power plants in the period, indicating 10.8 percent increase compared to the first month of the last fiscal year, according to the report.

The Gas oil consumption in the country's thermal power plants also decreased by 76.4 percent and stood at 53 million liters in the one-month period.

Meanwhile the power plants' fuel oil consumption registered a 16.7 percent fall and reached 196 million cubic meters in the period.

The country seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than $1.1 billion worth investments for the construction of new power plants.
