US ISA extension against JCPOA spirit, says expert

Tehran, Iran, Dec. 2

By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

The recent move of the US Senate in passing the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) for a 10-year extension is against the spirit of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Saeed Yari, chief secretary of the Organization on Iran's National Interest Protection said.

The move is a violation of the purpose of the JCPOA despite the fact that Americans associate the ISA with human rights status and missile programs in Iran, Yari told Trend December 2.

On December 1, the US Senate overwhelmingly voted 99-0 to reinstate the ISA, an extension of sanctions on Iran. The bill had already been passed two weeks ago by the House of Representatives with a landslide margin of 419-1, now at Obama’s desk for final approval.

If not extended, the ISA expires by the end of 2016.

It is a surprise that they have moved to extend the sanctions for another 10 years while they have been keeping diplomatic talks and business conventions such as the ones which led to granting permission to the sale of Airbus and Boeing airplanes to Iran, Yari said.

“While Iran has implemented its part of the JCPOA, meaning it has backed down on its nuclear activities by removing the calandria and taking further steps, their efforts to start economic cooperation have all stalled at some point.”

Things will get more intense if Obama ratifies the bill, the expert said.

“However, they may pull some strings behind the scene in order to leave the ratification for Trump in order to prevent further calamity with the current administration.”
