Iran produces 1.8 mln tons of crude steel in May

Over 1.79 million tons of crude steel was produced in Iran in May 2017, the World Steel Association said in its latest monthly report.

The figure indicates an increase by 8.8 percent compared to the same month of 2016 (1.645 million tons).

The country’s steel output reached 8.159 million tons in the first five months of 2017, 13.1 percent more year-on-year.

Iran was the world’s 14th biggest producer of steel in the 5-month period. The country also ranked second in the region after Turkey.

According to the World Steel Association, 694.876 million tons accounted for world crude steel production in 67 countries in the first five months of 2017, a 4.7 percent more compared to the same period of 2016.

Some 67 countries included in the World Steel Association statistics accounted for approximately 99 percent of total world crude steel production in 2016.

China was the biggest crude steel producer in the world in the first five months of 2017 with about 346.833 million tons of production, followed by Japan (43.936 million tons), India (41.822 million tons), the US (33.978 million tons), Russia (29.835 million tons), South Korea (28.42 million tons) and Germany (18.618 million tons).

The Islamic Republic’s steel output throughout 2016 is estimated to have hit 17.895 million tons. This in its own turn shows an increase of 10.8 percent year-on-year.

The country’s steel output in 2015 stood at 16.11 million tons, 1.4 percent less year-on-year.

Iran also produced 16.331 million tons of crude steel in 2014.

The country’s crude steel production reached 15.421 million tons in 2013, which was 6.6 percent more than in the preceding year.
