Iran has unveiled its new integrated minesweeping system (IMS) in the fourth stage of a massive military drill near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian ISNA news agency reported Dec. 28.
In the fourth stage of the drill, naval forces planted mines to deter mock enemy vessels and submarines from entering coastal waters. Another team immediately conducted a naval mine clearance exercise.
The Iranian navy's first IMS was launched last year. It was carried by an RH helicopter and can activate and explode naval mines' detonators using electromagnetic waves.
The new IMS, which came to operation during the ongoing drill, also sports a sonic system generating sound underwater to explode the naval mines.
Iran's army started a large-scale military drill dubbed 'Mohammad Rasulullah' Dec. 25, which covers an area of 2.2 million square kilometers from the country's south east territory, east of the Strait of Hormuz to the southern parts of the Gulf of Aden.
The six-day military exercise includes Iran's navy, air force, land units and the Khatam al-Anbia air defense base.
Iranian media outlets claim that Iran has recently secured great accomplishments in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.
