An earthquake measuring 4.8 on Richter scale took place in Kohnooj and Kerman towns in Iranian Kerman Province, Iranian IRNA news agency reported on Monday.

According to the Seismological Center at the Tehran University's Geophysics Institute, the earthquake took place at 14:42 local time.

No damage and injured is reported as a result of the earthquake.

Strong earthquakes often take place in Iran. The strongest earthquake in recent period occurred in December 2003 in the city of Bam, located in the southeast of Kerman province. The earthquake killed 31,000 people, destroyed ancient fortress, built of clay.

The most devastating earthquake of magnitude 7.7 on the Richter scale occurred in Iran in 1990. It killed 37,000 people in the provinces of Gilan and Zanjan. More than 100,000 people were injured.
